Harley Davidson and Dunlop tires have enjoyed a successful partnership for many years. In 2009, when Harley Davidson introduced a redesigned frame for its touring models, Dunlop was there to provide the utmost in handling, traction, and longevity.
As a result, Dunlop American Elite tires became a popular choice among Harley enthusiasts.
But, the main question I will answer in this review will be: Is this the best touring tire for you? Let’s find out!

The 2009 Torian Frame
The 2009 Torian frame from Harley Davidson was a significant design upgrade that featured more horsepower from larger displacement engines. It was also sturdier and had better handling, enabling it to take on heavier load capacities.
In addition, most of the FL lineup received taller front wheels or wider rear wheels, or a combination of both to handle these machines’ additional power and carrying capacities.
Dunlop American Elite Tires
To complement the new Torian frame, Dunlop offered American Elite MH90-21 tires. Compared to Dunlop’s D 402 tires geared towards Harley’s 2008 and earlier touring and FL Softail models, American Elite tires are heavier and have a much tougher feel.
With its heavy-duty carcass and robust sidewall, American Elite is an extremely well-made tire that delivers performance, a comfortable ride, and long mileage.
Multi-Tread Technology
American Elite cruiser tires are designed with Dunlop’s Multi-Tread Technology (MT), which provides a harder, longer-wearing centered compound with softer lateral grip compounds on the sides.
This multi-compound composition results in a more durable, longer-wear contact patch in the center and increased grip and traction performance when you hit the sides of the tread in light corners or long sweepers.

It’s always important to consult the manufacturer’s specifications before purchasing a tire to ensure that it’s the right fit for your motorcycle.
Consistent and Predictable Handling
Harley and Dunlop also ensured that with this multi-tread technology, riders would experience consistent and predictable handling when transitioning from the center of the tread all the way to the outer edges. The aggressive-looking tread pattern on the American
Elite tires feature a mix of long and short sipes that help evacuate water away from the contact patch while providing a steady and consistent grip from side to side. This tread pattern also helps keep tires from tracking in terrain grooves on highways.
Second-Generation American Elite Tires
The second generation of American Elite tires not only ups the ante for high mileage and black sidewall versions but also comes in a variety of cool new styles to match the OE look of most models.
This means there are narrow and wide white walls to suit all your needs. All this is from a cruiser tire designed, tested, and manufactured in America.

What I Like and Don’t Like
After testing this tire for 2000 miles, I can honestly say I like it. It has a good grip, gives a smooth ride, and handles very well with little signs of any wear. It’s also made in the USA, which is great as I always try to buy locally-made products.
Even though I like this tire, I had an issue when I first received it. The tire was damaged, but the supplier replaced it very quickly.
The only downside I could find was it was a little slippery in the rain when it was really wet, and it was a little noisy, but taking it all into consideration, I think it’s a good buy for the money.
