How does it manage to span such a wide range of temperatures and conditions? The secret is in the removable thermal liner.
I can ride with just the outer shell on warmer spring and fall days. The mesh lining allows decent airflow while blocking wind that can rob body heat.
Then as the temperatures drop, I simply zip in the thermal liner. This adds a substantial layer of insulation without a lot of bulk.
Suddenly the jacket transforms into a cold-weather riding companion. I’ve stayed warm and dry, commuting on 40-degree mornings as well as riding mountain twists and turns on 80-degree afternoons.
The ability to tailor the layers to match the conditions makes this my favorite do-it-all jacket. I can stretch the riding season on both ends without freezing or overheating. For riders in temperamental weather regions, that versatility is invaluable.
Airflow and Ventilation – Staying Cool on Hot Days
When summer hits its peak, even the Build Evolution outer shell can feel warm when stopped at lights. This is where the ventilation system comes into play.
It starts with the 3D mesh lining that allows air to flow freely between your body and the jacket. This effectively stops the “wet T-shirt” effect that holds heat next to your skin.
The exhaust vents along the back let out hot air that builds up inside. The chest vents were less effective since they lack direct airflow. But opening the front zipper down a few inches essentially turns them into intake vents.
On searing 90+ degree afternoons, the Build Evolution outer shell hits its limits. But for 60-85 degree rides, the combination of mesh and vents kept me comfortable and dry without overheating. Of course, the liner can always be removed to open up airflow on the hottest days.
So while it’s no substitute for a pure summer mesh jacket, I was impressed by how the design tackles airflow and ventilation. Paired with the right layers, you can extend the jacket’s usage into summer for many areas.
Packed with Useful Features for Riders
Beyond the basics, the Build Evolution includes a host of useful features that make every ride more convenient and comfortable.
The two zippered hand pockets provided a safe place to warm my hands on chilly mornings. And the left breast pocket stores smaller items like keys, wallets, and phones securely.
There are waist adjustment straps and snap sleeve adjusters to fine-tune the fit. This allowed me to snug up any loose spots for better coverage while riding.
Reflective detailing on the elbows and back boost nighttime visibility and safety. Fully sealed seams ensure wind and water are kept at bay when caught out in the rain.
Finally, the jacket is easy to put on and take off. The sleeves slide smoothly over your gloves, and everything zips and unzips with no hassle. No wrestling to get in or out.
All these thoughtful touches came together to enhance my daily rides. The Build Evolution feels like real riders designed it for the open road.
