New FIM Standard

One of the significant changes to the AGV Pista GP RR Carbon Helmet is the addition of the new FIM standard.

The FIM is the governing body for international motorcycle racing, including MotoGP, World Superbike, and Road Racing.

The FIM standard is a new safety standard for racing-specific applications, incorporating linear testing associated with ECE, puncture testing associated with Snell, and rotational testing.

The AGV Pista GP RR Carbon Helmet is the only off-the-shelf helmet with the FIM rating.

Construction and Fitment

The AGV Pista GP RR Carbon full-face Helmet is still constructed with 3k carbon and is available in multiple shell sizes ranging from extra-small to 2XL.

Weight

The helmet weighs three pounds and five ounces in a medium-small size.

Shape

The fitment of the helmet is intermediate oval to long oval, but the internals can be adjusted to best fit an individual’s head shape.

Spoiler

One of the significant changes made to the helmet is the new spoiler, designed to negate the weight of the helmet at speeds over 60-63 mph.

The spoiler works exceptionally well and feels like wearing nothing at all, even at high speeds.

The spoiler is an excellent addition for street riders as well as racers.

Face Shield

The face shield on the AGV Pista GP RR Carbon Helmet is the same as its predecessor, pinlock ready, and includes an insert in the box. The helmet also has tear-off strips.

The face shield mechanism is one of the smallest in motorcycling, making it easy to change the shield.

The helmet is a race helmet, so the shield has no middle position, only a crack position.

Vents

The helmet has rubberized plugs for the vents on top, which can be removed for airflow.

The chin vent is actuated from the inside of the helmet.

There are passive vents on the back of the helmet, but they cannot be closed off.

Inside the Helmet

The AGV Pista GP RR Carbon Helmet is ready for a hydration pack, and the cheek pads are incorporated into the neck roll, making it easy to remove them together.

The helmet has an adaptive fit system that allows the wearer to adjust the fit by adding millimeter pads to the front and back.

The EPS cutouts provide excellent ventilation, making this helmet ideal for track day or racing situations.

What I Like and Don’t Like About This Helmet

I have tested lots of helmets over the years and have come across only a handful where I couldn’t find anything major to report back, this is one f them.

I like the fact that the AGV Pista GP RR Carbon Iridium Helmet is lightweight and has a great aerodynamic design that makes it perfect for racing and spirited riding.

It adds hours to my track sessions without causing neck fatigue, and it’s easy to turn my head even at high speeds.

I also like the fact that the visor locks securely and can be opened with gloves. However, I do not like that the helmet is quite loud due to its carbon shell and the fact that it does not have detents for the visor adjustment.

The wind noise can be bothersome, but ear protection solves that problem. Additionally, the air vents have removable inserts that are easily lost.

The airflow is fantastic but can be quite loud, which is not ideal for street riding. The visor also has a tendency to fall down to a “cracked open” position, which can be frustrating, especially when waiting in line for the track Marshall.

However, the helmet is perfect for long rides, and the fact that it can save your life in a terrible motorcycle accident makes it worth every penny.
